Brief Art Curriculum Overview

The intent of the Art curriculum is to inspire creativity, imagination, and self-expression, while giving students a broad understanding of artistic traditions, techniques, and contemporary practices. By studying a wide range of artists, movements, and cultural influences, students are encouraged to explore how people communicate ideas, emotions, and values through visual forms. The curriculum is designed to help students develop technical skills, creative confidence, and critical thinking, while deepening their awareness of art’s role in shaping societies and cultures across the world.

The Art curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 aims to ensure that all students:

  • develop practical skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital art, and mixed media

  • study major art movements and artists, past and present, from a variety of cultures and traditions

  • explore big questions about identity, creativity, meaning, and the purpose of art in society

  • reflect on and express their own ideas visually and verbally, while learning to appreciate and critique the work of others

  • develop the ability to analyse and evaluate art by considering context, style, and intention, using evidence to support their viewpoints

  • understand how art and design influence individuals, communities, and global culture

  • communicate their learning and ideas clearly through sketchbooks, practical outcomes, written reflections, and discussion

  • engage with contemporary issues such as identity, diversity, the environment, technology, and social change, and explore how artists respond to them
