Brief Preparing for Adulthood curriculum overview
The intent of the Preparing for Adulthood curriculum is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to thrive as independent, responsible and fulfilled adults. Through a wide range of practical learning experiences, students are encouraged to develop resilience, self-awareness, and the ability to make informed choices about their future. The curriculum is designed to support students’ personal, social and emotional development, while helping them understand the opportunities and challenges of adult life.
The Preparing for Adulthood curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 aims to ensure that all children:
develop independence in managing everyday life skills such as cooking, budgeting, travel and self-care
understand the importance of health, wellbeing and making safe, informed lifestyle choices
build confidence in communication, teamwork and problem-solving
learn how to set goals, plan for the future, and make decisions about education, training and employment pathways
explore relationships, respect, and responsibilities as members of their community and wider society
gain awareness of rights, responsibilities and the law, including how to keep themselves safe both online and offline
experience opportunities that prepare them for the world of work, including work-related learning and career exploration
reflect on their strengths and areas for growth, and use feedback to support personal development
The aim is not only to prepare students for success in school, but to give them the tools to live independently, contribute positively to society, and lead healthy, fulfilling adult lives.
