Brief Physical Education curriculum overview
The intent of the Physical Education curriculum is to inspire all students to enjoy being active, develop physical skills, and understand the importance of health and fitness for life. Through a wide variety of sports and physical activities, students are encouraged to build confidence, resilience and teamwork skills. The curriculum is designed to promote positive attitudes towards physical activity, while supporting students’ physical, mental and social wellbeing.
The Physical Education curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 aims to ensure that all children:
take part in a broad range of physical activities and sports, both individual and team-based
develop competence in a range of techniques, skills and tactics to improve their performance
understand the importance of exercise for health, fitness and wellbeing
build character through qualities such as fairness, respect, teamwork and determination
experience competition in different forms, learning how to win and lose with respect
develop leadership skills by taking on roles such as coach, official or team organiser
use feedback and evaluation to improve their own performance and support others
explore the role of physical activity in society, including links to careers, leisure and lifelong fitness
The aim is not just to improve physical performance, but to encourage every student to find enjoyment in physical activity and to build habits that support a healthy, active lifestyle beyond school.
At Keystage 3
“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body; it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.”
