"The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together."

Brief Geography curriculum overview

The intent of the Geography curriculum is to inspire students with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Through the study of places, landscapes, environments and global issues, students develop an understanding of the connections between physical and human processes, and how these shape the world we live in. The curriculum seeks to broaden their knowledge, encourage responsible global citizenship, and instil a real passion for Geography both as an academic subject and as a way of understanding the world.

The National Curriculum for Geography aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop knowledge of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their physical and human characteristics and how these are interconnected

  • understand key physical and human geographical processes, and how they interact to produce distinctive environments and landscapes

  • become competent in a range of geographical skills, including fieldwork, to collect, analyse and interpret data

  • use maps, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to enhance their spatial awareness

  • communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills, and extended writing

  • understand how geographical knowledge, skills and enquiry can help them engage critically with issues such as sustainability, climate change, globalisation and resource management
