Brief PSHE Curriculum Overview
The intent of the PSHE curriculum is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to make informed decisions, build positive relationships, and manage the challenges of growing up in a complex and rapidly changing world. By exploring a wide range of topics around health, wellbeing, relationships, and citizenship, students are encouraged to reflect on their values, develop resilience, and take responsibility for their own lives and their impact on others. The curriculum is designed to help students thrive personally and socially, while preparing them for the opportunities and responsibilities of adult life.
The PSHE curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 aims to ensure that all students:
develop knowledge and understanding of physical and mental health, including how to make safe and healthy lifestyle choices
learn about relationships, including respect, consent, equality, and how to build positive and supportive connections with others
explore big questions about identity, responsibility, and personal values, considering how these shape their choices and behaviour
reflect on and express their own ideas and opinions, while respecting and listening to the perspectives of others
develop the ability to think critically about influences such as media, peers, and society, and make decisions based on evidence and values
gain an understanding of financial wellbeing, including money management, careers education, and preparing for future independence
communicate confidently and effectively in discussions, role play, debate, and written work
engage with contemporary issues such as diversity, equality, human rights, environmental responsibility, and digital safety, and consider how individuals and communities respond to them
The aim is not to tell students what to think, but to support them in developing the knowledge, empathy, and life skills that will enable them to flourish as healthy, confident, and responsible citizens in today’s diverse and interconnected world.
