Brief Religious Education curriculum overview

The intent of the Religious Education curriculum is to broaden students’ understanding of different worldviews, faiths and philosophies. By studying a wide range of religions, beliefs, and ethical questions, students are encouraged to explore how people make sense of life, express values, and respond to global and personal challenges. The curriculum is designed to help students develop respect, empathy and critical thinking, while deepening their awareness of cultural diversity in the modern world.

The Religious Education curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 aims to ensure that all children:

  • learn about major world religions and non-religious worldviews, including their beliefs, practices and traditions

  • explore big questions about meaning, purpose, truth, morality, and human experience

  • reflect on and express their own ideas, while listening to and respecting the views of others

  • develop the ability to think critically about different perspectives and use evidence to support their reasoning

  • gain an understanding of how religious and non-religious beliefs influence individuals, communities and societies around the world

  • communicate their learning clearly in different forms, including discussion, writing, and debate

  • engage with contemporary issues such as human rights, social justice, the environment and diversity, and consider how different beliefs shape responses to them

The aim is not to promote any single faith or belief, but to enable students to build knowledge, empathy and understanding that prepares them for life in a diverse and interconnected world.
